From an idea on paper to the app IDIENA uses to support its students
IDIENA wanted an application so that students on its programmes could practise micro-habits with a mentor's follow-up. They had the idea in writing; we turned it into requirements, designed it and led the project through to delivery.
- 3 months from first meeting to delivery
- +6 years working with IDIENA since delivery
The problem
IDIENA's method is based on practising micro-habits with a mentor's support, and they wanted their own application to manage it. They arrived with a written functional description. What they lacked was the translation into requirements, the design, the team and an idea of how much it would cost or take. Commissioning development in that situation carries a known risk: finding out mid-project that what is being built is not what was needed.
The solution
A web application for desktop, tablet and mobile with three roles (user, mentor and trainer) that mirrors the structure of their programmes: each course works on competencies, each competency is learned through video lessons and each lesson proposes micro-habits. The student picks theirs, receives email reminders at the frequency they choose and tracks their progress by competency and by area, with their mentor's follow-up. Integrated with Vimeo for video and Mailchimp for email.
Requirements and every screen approved by the client before a line of code; project led end to end with a single point of contact.

How we worked
- 1
Assessment
Reading of the functional description and sessions to pin down the role of each profile.
- 2
Design
Every screen and its flow, approved by the client.
- 3
First delivery in production
Built to the approved design, in the client's hands in under three months.
- 4
Extension
We are still working with IDIENA years later.
What we take away
Closing requirements and screens before coding is what makes it possible to deliver on time, without surprises and without training.
